Bowel Cancer Campaign

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, yet it’s still hard for many of us to talk about.

But your toilet could tell you more than you think – and noticing early signs can make all the difference.

Got a poo test? Do it now.

If you’re aged 50 or over, you’ll receive a free NHS bowel cancer screening kit in the post. It’s quick, easy and can help detect early signs of cancer – even before you have symptoms. Most people get a normal result, which can put your mind at rest. But if something needs looking into, the sooner we act, the better.

Don’t ignore it. Do the test. Send it back.

Got symptoms? Get checked.

You don’t have to be over 50 to get bowel cancer. It can affect people of all ages, and the earlier it’s found, the easier it is to treat. So if you notice something unusual – talk to your GP.

Know the signs and symptoms to be aware of at any age:

  • A change in your normal bowel habits – such as needing to poo more often or feeling like you haven’t emptied your bowels properly.
  • Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo.
  • Losing weight when you haven’t been trying to
  • Frequent pain and/or a lump in your tummy.
  • Feeling breathless
  • Feeling a lot more tired than usual

Even if you have any or all of these symptoms, it’s most likely that you won’t have bowel cancer, but it’s still worth checking.

How can I look after my bowel health?

A healthy gut starts with the choices we make every day. From what you eat to how active you are, simple changes can help keep your bowels in good working order – and reduce your risk of conditions like bowel cancer.

  • Fill up on fibre – many of us fail to eat enough fibre to ensure healthy bowels – beans, wholemeal bread, fruit, vegetables and brown rice all help us towards the 30g of fibre a day we need.
  • Drink plenty of water – It’s important to keep drinking, especially water. It encourages the passage of waste through your digestive system and helps soften poo. Without fluid, the fibre cannot do its job and you’ll get constipation. Drink a glass of water with every meal.
  • Avoid caffeine drinks as they can cause heartburn.
