Other Non-NHS Clinical Roles

You might alternatively want to explore career opportunities which still make the most of your clinical experience but outside of the NHS. Some examples are listed below with helpful links so you can find out more.

Forensic and prison medicine

Most doctors work within prison healthcare as a part of a specialty training rotation, but there are also limited opportunities for part-time and full-time roles. Most of these opportunities are in primary care but experience in communicable diseases, drug abuse or mental health is also very useful. Supporting prisoner rehabilitation can be a challenging but rewarding position.

Forensic medical examiner

This is a medical doctor who is responsible for examining bodies post mortem to determine the cause of death. These professionals are trained forensic pathologists who are called upon to investigate all deaths that may affect the public interest. Clinical forensic medical examiners (or forensic physicians/police surgeons) spend much of their time examining people who have been arrested. Detainees either ask to see a doctor, or need to be examined to see if they are fit for interview or fit to be detained:
